People might not realise just how subversive it was for the woman to get her "happily ever after" as a non-conventially attractive woman, particularly in the early 2000's. That was basically the peak of skinny being the beauty standard but Shrek loved Fiona for who she was, not what she looked like.

It was also one of the first animated films where the main characters were considered ugly design wise and still got a happy ending. Even in Beauty and the Beast, another story about who you are inside is what counts, the Beast turned back into a conventionally attractive man at the end
