As an older person whenever a member of the healthcare calls me “ Ms” it alters my level of comfort. That tells me that individual was raised in an environment where they were taught to be respectful. Also when I’m on the phone with a customer service representative for a company, it signals to me that they are going to do their best to resolve my issue. Thanks for showing respect.

I hate it. Feels very condescending to me.

It may be a regional thing. I actually do not like the addition of miss unless it’s with a last name only. It feels a bit condescending to me to use miss with a first name.

I think it’s a southern thing and a respect for me. I’m a third year md student and I always say mister or miss [first name] when I talk to a patient for the first time. Going to a school in the northeast I get some weird looks sometimes but I have no intention of stopping 😂

If they introduce themselves as miss Sarah then that’s miss Sarah. If not it’s Sarah. I’m not from the south lol

as a white person in the northeast it's just not something we do. it isn't considered rude to address another adult by their first name. as children absolutely it was also Mr. and Mrs. but after that it isn't something we do

Because if I addressed an older person without a Mr. or Ms. growing up, my mama would’ve whooped my tail. It is a sign of respect.

Depends on where youre at. In cali it can be an insult almsot like youre calling them old. in the south, its basically akin to an honorific. Just depends on the person

I'm from the north and we don't do that here. I've been a nurse for over 30 years. I ask them what they want to be called and use that. if you say can me Sarah then it's Sarah. if it's mrs smith than mrs smith it is.

I thought it was a thing African Americans did to show respect/professionalism because I've never seen European Americans say Ms. First Name. I dont know enough Asian Americans or Hispanic Americans know if they say Ms. First Name.

Im in the south so it feels natural to say it that way. But honestly you just have to go patient by patient and make that call.

I was raised in the south and this is 100% normal in my area. My kids friends call me “Mrs Ashley” and we all call our elders ma’am and sir.

I've only seen black nurses/pcts do this. To me it feels the same as calling someone honey or sweetie and I would never do it.

As someone getting older, adding the “Miss” makes me feel like you don’t think you’re talking to a fellow competent adult now that you mention it. Like I’m old before I’m a person. But I know you’re coming from a good place so I wouldn’t make a fuss.

Maybe a little different but when I have Spanish speakers I ALWAYS use “usted” instead of “tú” for the older folks because I’ve been taught it’s more respectful and I’ve heard native speakers not use it and I’m like 😳

I agree with you, I also don’t like the trend where teachers are called by their first name. I’m only 42, but people always call me “Miss —“ and I like it, my mom says it’s because I’m an older person in my soul😂
