By 1966, Andy Warhol had already become more famous than most of the celebrities he painted. That was the problem. This interview is from the height of the Factory years. Warhol had just launched the Velvet Underground. He was filling his paintings with helium and releasing them out windows. The art world couldn't decide whether he was a genius or a fraud, and Warhol refused to resolve the question for them. His interview style was itself the answer. Every question got deflected. Every attempt to get him to explain himself was met with silence, agreement, or a non-answer so perfectly constructed it left the interviewer with nothing to push against.

Every attempt to get him to explain himself was met with silence, agreement, or a non-answer so perfectly constructed it left the interviewer with nothing to push against. "I'm so empty today. Why don't you just tell me the words and I'll repeat them." He wasn't being difficult. He was being honest. Warhol genuinely believed that explaining the work killed it. That the artist's job was to put the thing in front of people and disappear. "There's not very much to say about me" is one of the stranger things any artist has ever said. Warhol has since been the subject of more biographies, films, and retrospectives than almost any artist of the 20th century. The man who claimed there was nothing to say about him generated more commentary than almost anyone alive. He was shot in 1968 by Valerie Solanas. He almost died. Friends said he was never quite the same afterwards. The detachment became more complete. Some people thought the shooting finished something that had been alive in him. "It would be so much worse not to care" is the line that catches. It's not confidence. It's a choice made in the full knowledge of the alternative. #AndyWarhol #PopArt #TheFactory #VelvetUnderground #1960s #DeadWrongHistory #History #ArtHistory
