I think i understand why korean people are also angry at this comment after watching your video and reading some of the korean comments. Im korean american but lived in korea majority of my life. Ive been called a foreigner despite, again, living in korea until i was 18 years old. And i do think your points as valid from this perspective because i feel the same way. But i do think your point about american obsession has now passed. I mean younger generations like gen z/alpha that glimmer of wanting to go to america no longer really exists. Up until 2000s a lot our life did center around what america was doing but that was because we were still in the process of becoming a wealthy country built ground up from war. (Right before kpop and other korean products became widely globalized) A lot of older koreans do have that sentiment of the american dream because well frankly america was definitely more developed compared to korea (in terms of better education and job search etc a long time ago) and the sentiment of americans “helping” korea still lasts with the older generations. (For example, my grandfather who immigrated to america to flee the japanese occupation with the american dream and he really did made it) with current times, i genuinely think the american obsession doesnt exist anymore in the cultural diaspora. People no longer really view america as be all or a better place because of how well korea is doing with their own achievements in education, work, culture, etc. which is why the younger generations of koreans in the comments dont understand the point of wanting to be in america and found that offensive due to themselves no longer growing up with those sentiments forced on from their parents. I felt this a lot too when i was interning for a company last year and three international koreans came for a program to learn english and what not. Those kids werent here because they saw the american dream but rather as a hey its a great opportunity to travel and then go back to korea. I feel like there arent that many koreans anymore who immigrate to america like in the 1980-2000 for this reason because korea is self sufficient enough

Being critical requires not seeing things in binary. Part of the issue is that we as a society are losing our sense of critical engagement and awareness of our own positionality. If someone isn’t fully aligned with us, we assume they must be against us. And it’s associated with a sense of betrayal

i’m not sure what your stance was before since i’m new to your account, but looking at a lot of korean-american creators, it feels like so many of them make a living just by dunking on korea. they’ll go on about how "toxic" or "looks-obsessed" the culture is, yet they’re out here making money off k-beauty and korean makeup styles. i’ve even seen people criticize korea’s history of slavery or class systems as if western imperialism and slavery were somehow more justified—it’s such a weird double standard. the thing is, a lot of them are stuck in the past because they’re viewing korea through the lens of their parents who left in the 70s or 80s. they don’t actually see how much the country has changed. i get that outside perspectives can sometimes help with self-reflection, but in korea, the vibe is that these people are just cashing in on negativity rather than sharing anything positive. people are naturally drawn to the "dark side" stuff and it's easy to get brainwashed by it, which is exactly what these creators are exploiting.

It's just that after hearing "All allegations towards Koreans, it's true" I doubt that that was purely criticism, especially when their reputation was dirtied by the handful of racists. When someone throws an allegation at you bc youre korean, how does that make u feel?

I believe that if you truly loved Korea and regarded it like family, you wouldn’t be acting this way. If it were family, when something is wrong, you would address it privately rather than criticizing them in front of others. Public criticism does not help correct the problem, and for that reason, it is hard to see this approach as coming from genuine care.

I think a lot of people get so reactive with criticism because they have a fear that actual bigoted people will take that criticism and weaponize it for their own agenda. I feel like that’s something that happens a lot, specifically in America, anytime we try to have controversial discussions regarding any minority group. I remember when people were trying to have a discussion about Hmart girl and a bunch of (white) people completely conflated that girl’s video to encourage racism against asians and a lot of people jumped on that. So it’s almost like a knee-jerk reaction to put up full force defense because people are just waiting for opportunities to strawman

This is so well said. I have a lot of issues with Korea as an international Korean, I recently realized that the frustration is coming from a place of love. I love my country and my people so I point certain things out.

I get your intentions but (1) positioning Korea as one to improve is audacious, lots of Koreans have a lot to say about the current system internally and more functionally but change takes time (2) external (global) recognition of Korea's internal issue has not helped resolve fundamental issues (3) people who are interested in Korea's situation tend to be interested in the wrong way (4) causing information to be interpreted as they will (5) ultimately creating a frame that Korea is this and that without understanding that Korea is own identity with its own resolution process

This is why south korea is so progressive, even tho many of you will disagree. Amongst Koreans there’s always check and balance. Not everyone is ultra nationalistic and there always someone to question those who are. That’s the difference between a first world and third world country.

Love it! Following. You are very clear about your love for both Korea and America. Both countries have obsessions with how we should look or “be” and it can be incredibly unhealthy.
