I think it would depend on other opportunities like if you had enough money to go to a black college or travel, but really, mixed girls occupied a middle space of both worlds partway jealous, partway adored, and partway accepting them where many were beloved spouses, moms and relatives to others, many were waitresses or cleaners, some acted and did theater, some sang, and some pioneered as first women of color to do many things kinda like how Amelia Earhardt did for the first woman to fly across the Atlantic! Lemme think here, I think the first person of color to perform at a Presidential inauguration was a tie between Louis Armstrong and a mixed songstress so light she insisted she was Portuguese. Saw a TikTok on it once. Can't remember her name but basically back in the day cuz cameras were black and white lots of fair skin mixed people were famous in the arts and people only found out years later! They owned mansions, businesses, married foreign princes, you name it! All boils down to not skin color, but did you have the chance in life and did you take it? Or did you hold back and stay under the covers? Booker T. Washington didn't stay under no covers!
