Speaking as a quality engineer, the is where the 8D method is a key tool. When you start jumping to solutions before properly defining the problem, you rarely actually solve the problem in the first place

One time five engineers stood in a circle gathered around an assembly for several hours, trying to build fixtures and force one part inside the other. The parts were separated by an o-ring that was getting damaged when the parts were pressed together. I stood back and watched, thinking about the problem holistically when I realized it just needed lubricant. When I suggested it they all suddenly stopped and got really quiet, then they admitted it should work. With lubricant it went together with zero effort. They were so focused on the problem they had tunnel vision and couldn't see the simple solution.

Genuine questiin from a totalbbeginner: while I understand a 100% that this is effective, strategic problem solvsing in the constraints of the system around, Dont you think that sometimes this approach might hinder innovation to a degree? Thinking outside the box, approaching topics with fresh eyes etc.. Or is this a different approach, different topic?
