@nepal.and.history: The Raute are the last truly nomadic ethnic group in Nepal, officially recognized as an endangered indigenous community. They primarily inhabit the forests of mid-western Nepal, moving through districts like Surkhet, Dailekh, and Achham. Key Cultural Traits Lifestyle: They are hunter-gatherers who live in temporary camps made of wooden branches and leaves, moving every few weeks based on water availability, hygiene, or following a death in the community. Diet: They are uniquely known for hunting langur and macaque monkeys for subsistence, alongside gathering wild tubers and forest fruits. Craftsmanship: They are skilled woodworkers, carving wooden bowls (kosi) and boxes to trade with local farmers for grains like rice, iron, and cloth. Governance: The community is led by a traditional chief known as a Mukhiya, who acts as the primary representative to the outside world. Principles: They traditionally adhere to three strict taboos: no permanent settlement, no formal education, and no agriculture. Current Challenges Population: Their numbers are critically low and declining; while the 2021 census recorded 566 individuals, field reports suggest the nomadic population may now be as low as 137–150 people. Health: High infant mortality, malnutrition, and a recent rise in alcoholism pose significant threats to their survival. Dependency: While they once avoided money, many now rely on a monthly government social security allowance (approx. Rs 4,000), which has begun to alter their traditional self-sufficient lifestyle.
