I have cochlear implant since I was two and half, I choose not to wear them anymore due to headaches they were giving me. I was hearing constant statics and voices are too low

My eldest daughter got them when she was three after she had lost essentially all hearing after meningitis. She is twenty now and is able to sing along K-pop songs. On official tests she is in the 99th percentile iirc, so as good as it gets. The true weakness exposes itself when there is a lot of background noise. But it's amazing how the brain can adapt to these crude devices 😌

Everyone’s journey is different. I’m just showing you mine to give you an idea of what to expect. If you can take some time to read the comments on all my other CI videos, you’ll see how wildly different everyone’s experience is, although most of us seem to agree on how it sounds at first. If you are a CI user, I encourage you to share your experience in the comments. I should have gone into more detail about the naturalisation phase after 6 months with my implant. I basically mean I don’t hear any robotic or tinny sounds whatsoever, and even though I can’t register some frequencies due to limited technology, the sounds I get aren’t robotic, and in the right environment I can get 87% of speech without lip reading. I’ve had it just over two years now, and I would say 80% of the progress came within the first 6 months. It’s been a slow grind of noticing tiny little differences ever since, like being able to listen to podcasts for longer without getting listening fatigue or understanding certain types of music a little better. I haven’t done a speech recognition test in 2 years, so I don’t know where I’m up to right now! Cochlear implants don’t cure deafness. I’m still reliant on a piece of technology that can malfunction, and it doesn’t register the same range of frequencies as a hearing person, so I’m still getting a simplified signal and some sounds arrive incomplete. This limits my ability to separate sound layers in busy environments. I can’t hear people on the phone when they are on loudspeaker, and I can’t watch TV without subtitles. I struggle with rock music, and to enjoy music it has to be streaming to my implant through Bluetooth. That’s just to name a few limits, but everyone is different and none of these limits are deal breakers for me. Getting a CI was the best decision I ever made. I also wore a hearing aid in my right ear (implanted side), which helped keep my brain connected to sound. Even though it wasn’t clear hearing, it meant my brain was still processing audio, keeping the auditory nerve and auditory cortex active, which is an important factor for CI success.

I got activated in December. I feel like this is a great representation. I said stage 2 is the Dalek stage. I am now entering stage 3. I say music sounds like karaoke underwater and the instruments sounds like playing on a metal saw.

God as someone with hearing aids that cried getting re-programmed last week because of the robotic sounds, I couldn’t handle the first 1-2 months of hearing that 😭😭
