Ricky Lopez :
Apprenticeship means different things between the younger gen, my gen, my dad's gen. Apprenticeship goes way back to Mason's, collectively to Union Stweardship. Master techs, Shop foremans should not be involved in your training period.. Tech leads, guys who know different skill sets; Example- You train next to a electrical guy for X amount of months, next manual trans guy, automatic guy, ac guy, suspension, brakes, engine and so on with you moving around the shop accordingly while at tech training schools and dealership schools. You pass final examinations with ASE, dealer (In my case Toyota), with your Union and the State (Yes the State of California has requirements for a Skilled technician exams) After all that, your shop foreman has to pass you based on shop experience, tech level, credentials and hours. Statistically it takes 5 years for Apprenticeship, before that your a Installer, before that a lube tech. So in all it can take 7, 8, 9 years to became a full fledged not just a Master tech but Journeyman. All you young guys have it easy and dont really understand the meaning behind Apprenticeships. Who cares about being a Master, I was at 23yrs old for Toyota and Never Ever said I was. Im retired with Toyota and Auto instructor and signed off many Apprentices that did the right thing. Hope you went through the Union, Union Stewardship goes back centuries, if not, it is what it is and happy wrenching ✌
