We were on the same timeline - NYC fashion industry in the 90’s - $25k. We stayed on top of every free event in the city with no cellphones or internet. Sounds crazy now. Also, had to be friends with the executive assts so you knew what floor had leftover bagels to grab for dinner. 😹🥰

Anna Wintour asked me only one question when I interviewed for my job at Vogue in the 90s: “What does your boyfriend do?” It was basically essential to have family money or a boyfriend who was paying your bills in order to have one of these glamorous but barely paid jobs. And we got free food (but had to be rail thin so we barely ate) and clothes and beauty products.

Omg I do remember the slimfast days. I used to drink slimfast and eat Frosted Flakes, that was my diet and somehow I managed to stay thin even though it was all sugar and very little protein.

I graduated FIT in ‘89. Worked briefly at Gitano after interviewing at Conde Nast where salaries were 16k. I remember most of the girls being socialites. Regardless, it was a wild time with having a second job as a server and in a gym, invitations to clubs via fax, living in a prewar walk up with 3 people in a 388 sq foot apartment, walking out the door where there was always something going on, and sample sales…I’m old now but was an “IT” girl then…with so many wild stories.

I lived on 42k in the 2000s as a medicine resident! My roommate and I lucked into a rent stabilized apt, we each paid $1200 but we did have a real kitchen and a doorman on the UWS. I worked 80h/wk, so we rarely went out. And I ate free hospital food lol. All my money went to rent and student loans lol. It was super fun but a hell of a lot less glamorous than working for CK lol

🙋♀️Late ‘90’s, 2 bedrooms 3 girls, 2 fashion/1 music industry, I had the “loft” bed and the rolling rack that I shared with 1 of the other girls (who are both two of my very best friends to this day). Those were the days!!! We all thought we were Carrie Bradshaw (or at least I did).
