I always say, never advance a contractor- a deposit of 10% should be standard, with weekly progress payments. If the contractor doesn’t have the money to start his projects he isn’t a good contractor. Offer to pay for the materials directly to the supplier and offer him a percentage for markup. It does take time to find the products and get the specs, so markup a little is fair.
