@travelwithkids3: ✨ If you saw my last reel about travelling Japan with kids, you’ll know it sparked a lot of conversation. Some people assumed my kids were misbehaving, or that we didn’t understand Japanese cultural norms. But we’ve been travelling Japan for years — I speak Japanese, and our kids know the rules: quiet on trains, shoes off, respectful in shops. After sharing that reel, so many families reached out. Comments poured in from people saying their children were pushed, shoved, or even knocked over — subtle or not-so-subtle signs of frustration toward foreign families. We weren’t the only ones noticing this shift in attitudes. What’s changed is that tourism has increased significantly in the last few years. Families who visited five years ago often didn’t notice it, but now there’s a subtle pressure — a feeling that your family shouldn’t exist in public spaces. A silent expectation to make your children invisible. My kids are remarkably well-behaved in Japan, and I often apologise to them for having to shrink themselves. But here’s the truth: kids should be allowed to exist and be part of society. Despite all of this, Japan is a country we will always love and continue to go back to. If you’re planning a trip there with kids, there’s no need to be afraid — just be prepared. And if you’re after practical tips, itineraries, and guides for family travel in Japan, hit follow and save some of my free itineraries on my website — designed for families at every age and stage. . . . . . Why do people give Japan a racism hall pass?

No shade, but this is how black people feel 24/7 😭 especially those born in the west. We’re treated with hostility and/or suspicion for being out in public

“I speak the language” that’s all I needed to believe you. My best friend lives there and she expresses this as well.

The global shift towards anti-tourism is a global shift towards xenophobia and alt-right, I stg. In the US, it even happens between states. Common pattern though: late stage capitalism makes life hard for the common man, and instead of being mad at politicians and corporations, people get mad at other common man who just happens to look different…concerning

I’ve traveled the world. I’ve probably been to more countries than most people can name. I spent 6 months in Japan. Japan was by far the most racist country I’ve ever seen. Korea is second

I've gone in 2008, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and just recently in 2025. The difference in how I was treated between all those times compared to 2025 is wild. It was ridiculous. I speak Japanese. I know the rules. But it didn't matter because I'm foreign.

My last trip to Japan really soured me on the country. I felt like I could never relax in public. But it did give me a lot of empathy for visitors to my own country & I promised myself to be extra kind to tourists at home.

My husband and I have been followed around stores and told we weren’t allowed in because we weren’t Japanese. We lived there for 3 years.

No shade to Japan but try China. Kids are welcome and are in fact treated royally and pampered. Most importantly, rules and social norms are far lesser, just treat others what you would want them to treat you. We have gone every year since they were born and stayed a whole month each time. You can find everything here.

My husband amd I went pre- kids and took our kits last year. theres so much more hostility towards tourists now. Politeness doesn't necessarily mean they want you there.

it’s funny how anti tourist japan is when they heavily rely on tourism. ESP the smaller parts and cities of the country, they very much want tourists

kinda noting everyone saying it's been in the past 2 years that there's an underlying hostility towards tourists. has anyone thought that maybe the political climate happening in the States might be affecting that?

Japanese people are tired of of recent tourist not respecting their country’s culture. It’s not just your family. They’re tired of all tourists. They’ve had enough disrespect they just assume all are the same.

I felt this pressure with my kids when I visited. Like I was constantly shushing them and expecting them to be dolls instead of children. For such a large city that Tokyo is, it's really quiet.

I just came back from Japan, it was my 6th trip. Reading the comments here showed me that it wasn’t just in my head but that there really was a shift towards tourists. I felt like I was constantly walking on eggshells this time.
