@onlinethirdmate: 🟥SUBJECT: ANCHOR CHAIN MARKINGS (For future seafarers) Knowing exactly how many shackles (shots) are paid out or remaining on deck is critical for safe anchoring operations. One shackle (shot) is equal to 15 fathoms or 27.432 meters Each shackle is identified by a red detachable link(Kenter shackle), with adjacent white links indicating the shot number (for example, one white link on each side for 1 shackle/15 fathoms, two white links for 2 shackles/30 fathoms, and so on). The next-to-last shot is painted yellow, and the last shot is fully red, clearly warning the crew that the bitter end is approaching. However, there are times where paint markings may fade, different color code or may not be color-coded at all; in such cases, seafarers often rely on wire turns wrapped around specific links to identify the number of shackles paid out.
