“Giving my kids what I never had” most dangerous parenting tack tick. Because you don’t give them what made you succeed. Adversity, Challenges and Struggle …. These things breed strength, character, accountability and grit.

Yea. Most kids in the upper middle class have parents with high paying professional jobs (labour). The kids don’t realise this is not the same as wealth that comes from ownership. This means they need to also obtain high paying jobs which require high grades and dedication at Uni (medicine, engineering, actuarial sciences etc. ) to sustain the lifestyle the parents afforded them.

I recently transferred my kids from an upper class school because I couldn't afford the extra curricular activities anymore, guess what? My son who was a below average student lacking self esteem and confidence has improved tremendously

Oh my parents afforded me such a privileged life. At some point I was oblivious to struggle and contraints. Now Im fighting to step out of comfort and procrastination so I can make it for myself instead of being comfortable with assets that aren’t even mine.

So sad…you need to remember those kids are from generations of wealth. The schools afford you a view through the window and not the keys to the door

Exposure can either make a kid complacent or highly motivated.. it’s about character and perception. Weak characters get entitled, others get inspired.

And the upper middle class children some get into drugs thinking it’s cool or trying to be like the wealthy children who will be sent over seas for rehab well you stay around and your parents are now stuck with a child who went to an expensive school and now battling addiction. Ish

Parents are at fault because they don’t have uncomfortable money conversations. We need to make it blatantly clear to our kids that we cannot AFFORD to buy them elephants and that existing in the same circles as ultra rich people does not necessarily make us rich.

It’s very easy to delude yourself cause you don’t get a fully paid off car and apartment in varsity like your wealthy friends, that’s when I started moving differently cause I would be one bad decision away from actually touching the poverty line.
