Wrapping pots properly, safely, is an important skill in itself. As potters, we ship work around the world that’s often incredibly fragile, one wrong knock, or a good kick, is all takes for the vessel inside to split, unless of course it’s wrapped sufficiently. I’ve always leant towards the side of caution and I tend to overwrap work as I’d rather spend a few more pennies per parcel in terms of packaging materials, then have it break during transit. I spend around £1500 a year on fresh boxes, cardboard, tape and the like, yet there’s always also stock from previous shop restocks, older packaging materials that I constantly have to work through. There’s no way I can order precisely the correct number of boxes and inevitably this stuff ends up clogging the workshop, (if you visit at the moment, you’ll be met with a few 15 cubic foot bags of biodegradable packaging chips in the hallway). I also need a space that’s dedicating to wrapping, what a privilege that would be, as at the moment, whenever a shop restock comes along, I basically have to switch the workshop from a pottery to a packaging depot. That’s another thing to add to my dream studio… The last thing I’m always curious about are those cardboard shredding machines, do any of you potters use them? They’re expensive bits of kit but in the long-run it means I can reuse hundreds of cardboard boxes from my neighbours, or from home, to pad the parcels I pack.
