@drdrewprovan: The size of the red cells in anaemia gives us major clues in terms of the underlying cause of the anaemia. If you’re anaemia check your MCV. #bloodtests #hematology #redcellsize #anemia #fyp
Iron pills for last 6 yrs. Still anemic. You’d think Dr would dig for root cause 🙄

Mean cell volume conversations are important but also overwhelming 🫠 I remember feeling like a walking lab report while still exhausted daily. My digestion was chaotic and my periods heavy. I blamed myself for being weak. A friend in a hormone support group mentioned Eat like a woman protocol by Loren Green so I read it. 29 lbs down, lighter flow, steadier energy. Felt like addressing the pattern instead of just chasing numbers.

None of my doctors have actually tried to figure out why I’m anemic… but don’t seem concerned, just tell me to keep supplementing.

I have a MCV of 100.5 fl but my GP says it's normal as the lab ref range is 85 - 105, but I'm really struggling with brain fog, extreme fatigue, heart palpitations and constant headaches. My folate was 3.4 and b12 294 and I keep being told everything is normal but I feel far from fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

If hemoglobin and hematocrit are within normal range but your ferritin is low and oral iron tablets haven’t increased your iron then have a stool test conducted to determine if you have H. Pylori.

Hello. Could you give some helpful tips on thalassemia. I’m suffering from extreme chronic fatigue and joint pain during flares.

Normal MCV can still indicate a mix of small and large red blood cells, as they may balance each other out and appear average overall.
Iron deficiency = low MCV.
B12 deficiency = high MCV.
Both together = normal MCV but ongoing symptoms.

Confused. So even within normal range you still have issues? What should it be then?

Normocytic can also be coexisting iron and b12/folate deficiency

If my ferritin was 7 but mcv was 97, folate and b12 were normal but towards the lower end. What would you be thinking?
