He was tried under juvenile law, sentenced to 10 years, and served about five to six before returning to the U.S. By the early 1970s, Getreu had settled near Stanford, living openly—married, working blue-collar jobs, even volunteering with the Boy Scouts. But during this same period, two young women were strangled: Leslie Perlov in February 1973, with her own scarf, and Janet Taylor in March 1974. Just a year later, in 1975, Getreu was convicted of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old Explorer Scout in San Mateo County—serving six months. Prosecutors later highlighted this pattern of targeting young women. Decades passed, and many in his life never suspected the darkness lurking behind his facade—until 2018, when advances in genetic genealogy linked his DNA to the crime scenes of Perlov and Taylor. In 2021, a jury convicted him of Taylor’s murder and sentenced him to life. In 2023, he pleaded guilty to Perlov’s murder—passing away in custody that September.
