In 2004, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics along with David Politzer and Frank Wilczek for discovering asymptotic freedom—the finding that quarks interact more weakly at very short distances or high energies. Gross earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and later became a long-time faculty member at Princeton University. He also served as director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
