My parents are both deaf and mute. ASL was my first language, and when I entered kindergarten I went into speech therapy because i literally didn’t know how to use my voice. It is absolutely my place to use ASL whenever I want/need. I even considered being an interpreter when I was younger because I have the ability to bridge that gap between the deaf and hearing community. You can absolutely have your opinion but you cannot take away other peoples experiences simply because you don’t agree with it.

My professor in college is a CODA. However, he adds in our grade going to deaf events. In order to talk with deaf people and learn from them. I found myself learning better from them.

Except, they’re trying to spread ASL awareness and bring communities together. My (Deaf) ASL teacher isn’t even actually qualified to teach it. Codas often learn ASL before English, and I don’t think it’s fair to diminish their role in the community.

Are you claiming they are taking jobs from deaf people? Why on earth would you assume they are doing it “for clout”? Language learning translates to greater accessibility. More people teaching and learning other languages seems like a good thing.
