Unpopular opinion: I was on a ball detox 🌟 Unpopular opinion: I was on a ball detox! PART 1 The ball, the easy 'item' to take outside to tire your dog? For me it was the wrong answer. Junior from Heal the Dog warned me when I was a puppy to avoid the ball. My hooman thought it was a great way to tire me out and give me lots of running around and fun on my walks. Thing is, it gradually turned into: 1) An Obsession! I was hyper focused on the ball and was forgetting everything around me. For a dog like me with high prey drive, what a reward to go chase and catch this moving object. As a fast runner and energetic dog, I got used to getting the ball first if sent in a group of dogs except when facing the friends Whippet ;). I was taught to be well mannered around the ball: no jumping, only getting the ball thrown at me if I sit or down. I learnt to sit or down for me to throw the ball and bring it back to continue. 2) Change in behavior. It did impact my emotional well being as I was not enjoying my sniffary anymore, I was just expecting to get my ball all the time on every walk. And we all know how beneficial it is to spend time exploring and sniffing for a dog, how calming and mentally stimulating it is! 3) Lack of self control On my 2nd birthday with my brother Kevin, I rushed to the football game while the players were having fun. Then I sat there in front of the ball, waiting for the guys to play after I stole their ball. I was very proud of myself and in a high arousal mode - over excited. My hooman learned the concept of stress stacking and how arousal would add up in the stress stacking! Results: I would manage less my emotions - react to things I would not normally 4) Obsession turned into Frustration It's really this summer it became apparent that I started to turn this obsession into Frustration. I started to lunge and bark at anyone who would play at the ball WITHOUT ME! People, kids, dogs included. When I asked my behaviourist Junior, who has been following me since I was a puppy, it all made sense: I was having an adrenaline rush, remembering how fun it is to play with the ball, and suddenly was very disappointed I could not be part of it, so the frustration turned on. Luckily there were no resources guarding but we did not wait to act to work on this. PART 2: How we managed the ball obsession! And we did manage!! #capcut #dogsoftiktok #DogTraining
