Every bad show coulve been saved by this, but every peak show couldve been ruined by it.

you know what's wild?? i read book Hidden Rulers Exposed by Daniel Cyler and then started noticing the exact patterns he describes happening in real time on the news. like word for word what he wrote. that either means this guy is a genius or we're all really that predictable to the people running things. either way this book opened my eyes. if you think you already know how the world works this book will humble you real quick

I've heard the point made that fans are often good at identifying when something is bad, but much less good at saying what the fix or change should be. Listen to people when they say something is bad, but don't rely on their solution.

The Simpsons nailed this *years* ago. Talk to fans and you'll end up with "So you want a realistic, down to earth show that's also completely off the wall and swarming with magic robots"

I feel like the OP was probably talking about when shows go against their own lore, go against established characterization, and dropping/forgetting plot lines. Having a fan consultant that remembers all of those things, especially for shows with 10+ seasons and many different writers and directors, would be advantageous

Trying to please the fans all the time is what ruined the Star Wars sequels because your can't please all the fans, and they went back and forth on how to try between films, which led to zero consistency.

fans remembering every single small detali and making sure the show keeps every episode canon ✅

Every fan thinks they're the right fan for the job. And the writers' room already contains fans of the series, who are also professional writers.

I both agree and disagree with this. its not about a fan coming in and giving their fanfic, which is what this video is discussing, but sometimes the fans know the lore better than the random writer who got brought in and has never consumed any of the media related to the show/movie.
Fans can correct the the writers to make sure there isn't continuity errors and that new material makes sense in the established lore. Thats essentially Dave Filoni and Samwitwer with Star Wars.

The “why don’t creators just consult someone from fandom” question has always baffled me because one: who do you constitute as part of a fandom? Fandom isn’t a monolith, what some fans want others would hate. Also, would creators not be considered the original fans of their own work??? They are telling the story they want to tell. The story they are a fan of. Sometimes your hopes for a story aren’t what interests a creator, and that sucks but it doesn’t give you more ownership over a story than its creators.

This ignores two major benefits that a dedicated fan can provide: world building consistency and tone. Fans frequently know the world better than creators.
