@redditstories_doggo: My sister's ex-boyfriend is one of my employees, and they broke up because he cheated on her with her best friend, but I still gave him a promotion after hearing about the situation because he's easily been my best worker. I see both sides. He shouldn’t have fired him but he 1000% could have promoted someone else.

you need to check his employment contract because a lot of employers nowadays will include a morality clause that in his situation he would have been fired for

People acting like it's so easy to fire a good working employee. She has every right to be upset and I feel sympathy for her, Josh is a dick, but causing drama and stress on the other employees for the sake of loyalty is just stupid. Stuff isn't black and white and people need to get a grip. As for my opinion on OP, it's eh. A guy between a rock and hard place not much more to say.

NTA. you're his boss, you judge his work performance only. his personal life is not your business, sister's ex or not

In a lot of places firing him would have been wrongful termination and not legal

Imagine being fired for personal reasons. Labor lawsuit is waving

Depending on where they live, if OP fired him, he could’ve sued, and in some places, if OP withheld promotions or raises due to this, he also could’ve sued

nta, itd be different if this was a McDonald's or something. but for a small business where one person makes or breaks getting paid it's impossible to fire him, tho I would've given him a 25% raise or something similar

Totally NTA. I totally understand what sister is coming from, especially where it’s a business where you’re in charge. That being said, firing someone when they’re doing amazing at work just because of a personal reason? That opens you up to massive lawsuits, and ethics violations that could get your business shut down. It sucks, but unless there’s a reason to actually fire someone or a reason, not to promote them, you have to keep work professional, even when it’s hard.

Finally a story where siblings actually talked out the issue rather than just taking the easy route & jumping to NC. I love a happy ending!!

both sides would be valid, he doesnt have to fire her but she can absolutely be mad at him, especially if he admits he'd fire her if he was the one betrayed

Nta. How you run your company is none of your family’s business. You moved up the most qualified worker. His personal life is none of your business.

Work life and personal life should be kept separate. Since the cheating part is a problem between a worker and someone who has nothing to do with the specific workplace, it's far from ok to punish him for it. Would have been more complicated if his sister worked for him as well since it would create an awkward environment...

im sorry but I don't agree that she has every right to be upset at OP, she has a right to be upset with the circumstances, the world, God, but not op. op could lose his entire life over something that has nothing to do with him. he didn't cheat, he didn't convince him to cheat and just bc you are family doesn't mean you have to lose yourself for someone. if you do something outside of work, fine but when you work the outside world doesn't exist. when you're home, work world doesn't exist. it's not ok for her to be upset with him and I'm glad to see she wasn't upset with him but the circumstances.
