@eye369heru: Deleted scene from the movie Sinners speaks on the origin of blues, its similarities to praise music/gospel and how they both were brought from the motherland, Africa. Blues seem to have its origin in West African traditions carried by enslaved people from places like the Sahel in Mali and Senegambia back in the 1700s and 1800s transatlantic slave trade era. Stringed instruments like the AKONTING turned into the BANJO! And melismatic solo singing styles hit the US South around 1860s forming Delta blues. Scholars Paul Oliver and Gerhard Kubik back this up with “blue notes,” like flattened thirds and sevenths nasal sounds and call and response straight from field recordings of Black sharecroppers. This ties right back to those melodic Sahelian folk ways brought from the motherland. Blues and gospel praise music got that same African blood, emotional vocal bends, communal back and forth, straight up raw feel for pain or joy, all from spirituals sung by them same enslaved Africans.
