Windsor Castle. The largest and most ancient castle in the world. The Castle was originally commissioned by William the Conqueror in the decades after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Windsor was not originally used as a Royal Residence. Norman King preferred to use the former Palace of Edward the Confessor in the village of Old Windsor. Henry I was the first King to use Windsor Castle as a Residence. Henry II came to the throne in 1154 and ordered the Castle to be extended between 1165 and 1179. King John also undertook building work. John used the Castle as His base during the negotiations before the singing of the Magna Carta at nearby Runnymede in 1215. Damage to the Castle was done by French Troops in 1216 and repairs were made between 1216 and 1221 by John successor Henry III. The walls of the Lower Ward were rebuilt in stone, three towers were constructed and the Middle Ward was heavily reinforced with a southern south wall protected by the New Edward III and Henry III towers at each end. Windsor was Henry III favourite out of three Royal Residence. He spent more money on the Royal Accommodation of Windsor than any other property. Following His Marriage Henry commissioned a luxury palace between 1240 and 1263 based around the court along the north side of the Upper Ward for His Queen and Children. In the Lower Ward he ordered the construction of a range of buildings for His own use along the south wall including a 70 foot tall chapel later called the Lady Chapel. Henry also had the Great Hall enlarged. The Great Hall was later destroyed in the fire of 1296 and wasn’t rebuilt. Edward IIi was born at the Castle and used it extensively throughout His reign. In 1344 the King announced the foundation of a New Order of the Round Table at the Castle. Edward order the beginning of construction of a new building in the castle to host this order but was never finished. Shortly afterwards Edward abandoned the plans and instead established the Most Noble Order of the Garter. He used Windsor as the HQ for this new Order and completed it with the attendant called the Poor Knights of Windsor. Between 1350 and 1377 Edward stayed in the Round Tower well renovating Windsor.

In 1399 Henry IV seized the Castle during a coup but failed to catch Richard II who had escaped to London. Edward IV seized back control in 1461 when He hosted a lavish fest in 1472 after revive the Order of the Garter. In 1475 Edward began construction the present day Saint George Chapel. In 1642 when the English Civil War broke out John Vernon took control of the Castle with twelve companies of Soldiers after Parliament was concerned that Charles I would advance to London. In 1649 Charles body was brought through a snowstorm to be interred into the Vault beneath the Chapel of Saint George. After the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 Charles II appointed Prince Rupert to the role of Constable of Windsor. George I took little interest in Windsor using St James Palace, Hampton Court and Kensington more than Windsor. George II also rarely used Windsor. Many of the Apartments were used as grace and favour privileges for prominent widows or friends of the Crown. The Duke of Cumberland used the Castle as property for His role as Range of Windsor Great Park. George III used more and more of Windsor because He disliked Hampton Court. Victoria and Albert made Windsor their principal Royal Residence despite Victoria complaining that it was dull and tiresome. Edward VII came to the Throne in 1901 and decluttered and redecorated many rooms in the upper ward. George V continued the modernist modernization with help from Queen Mary. In 1917 George V used Windsor as the change of the Royal name after the First World War. Edward VIII didn’t spend much time at the Castle during His short reign. He used the Castle as the setting for His Abdication Speech in 1936. George VI preferred Royal Lodge but moved into Windsor with His Wife and two Daughters. In 1939 George moved His Daughter and many Household Staff to Windsor during World War Two. He spend most of His time in London but Evening and Weekend at Windsor. The Crown Jewels were stored in the Basement of the Castle and only a few people knew where they were. In 1952 Elizabeth II used Windsor as a Weekend Retreat. In 1992 a major fire broke out for a lamp close to a curtain. It lasted 15 hours and causing widespread damage
