Operators were testing how long turbines would generate power after shutdown. But the reactor had design flaws, and critical safety systems were disabled during the test. A sudden power surge triggered two massive explosions. The reactor core was exposed to the open air. Graphite caught fire. Radioactive material was blasted high into the atmosphere. Firefighters arrived within minutes, unaware they were being exposed to extreme radiation. Many would later die from acute radiation sickness. Nearby residents in the city of Pripyat were not immediately told what happened. Life continued as normal for nearly 36 hours before evacuation began. The explosion released radioactive fallout across Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and parts of Europe. It became the worst nuclear disaster in history. Dozens died directly from the explosion and radiation sickness. Thousands more were affected by long-term radiation exposure. The Soviet Union initially tried to downplay the accident, but radiation alarms in Sweden forced international attention. Today, Chernobyl remains a restricted exclusion zone, and Reactor 4 is sealed beneath a massive steel containment structure.
