They thought this dark chapter of history belonged to the 1800s. But more than 130 years later, the disturbing term “baby farm” was making headlines again. 1892 — Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. An old newspaper reported a scandal involving Josephine A. Hoage, a woman who described herself as a professional nurse. Six babies were reportedly in her care, and two had died within just three weeks. Two funerals in less than a week raised suspicions among neighbors. Hoage sought a hospital license, but the judge delayed granting it. A Board of Health investigation was expected. 2025 — Arcadia, California. A modern surrogacy scandal emerged involving Guojun Xuan and Silvia Zhang, a couple reported to have 21 children, many born through surrogate mothers. In October 2026, Los Angeles County prosecutors filed felony charges alleging a conspiracy to commit child abuse involving children living in the couple's mansion. According to prosecutors, the home contained more than 30 surveillance cameras, and some children were allegedly subjected to physical punishment by caregivers. Xuan's attorney has denied accusations that his client was abusive. Two very different cases. More than 130 years apart. One disturbing historical term. From Victorian-era baby farming and historical newspaper scandals to modern surrogacy investigations, child welfare, and questions about private childcare oversight, the comparison raises an unsettling question: Is history repeating itself, or are we using an old name to describe a very different modern controversy? What do you think? The Forgotten Edition, bringing forgotten history back to life.
