I love films where they trust the audience's intelligence.

I love when movies are split into acts and chapters. I feel like the greatest movies of all time feel like books, and I love when they lean into it

Personally, I feel like there’s almost an over reliance on “chapters” as act breaks now but they’re literally called out with titles saying “chapter 1” etc. it’s a real pet peeve for the same reasons you’re saying

Implying requires people to actually be watching and not sittinh on their phone. Netflix has started to write screenplay so that thr actors can describe what happen so you can sit on your phone

I worked with Matthew Modine for several years. If anyone here is a fan of FMJ, you need to read Matthew’s Full Metal Diary, which was his journal while filming the movie

Like in Citizen Kane when it cuts from his father saying “Merry Christmas” in downbeat voice, to him some years later saying joyfully “..and a happy new year”

Dialog today is written in a simplified and repetitive way because filmmakers know the audience will spend a good portion of the movie staring at their phones. Hand holding is necessary today because attention spans are miniscule. Not many movies can be made like this today.

The Deer Hunter did that in a really good way. The jump from Pennsylvania to Vietnam… You have no idea what happened in that missing time and before you get a chance to catch up with these characters all hell breaks loose.

I LOVE a good time skip because you suddenly have a bunch of stuff to figure out. Where are we? When are we? How have the characters changed? How has the world changed? Why did we skip to NOW specifically? It injects a little burst of mystery into the story and it can be really engaging when done well.

This film and Pulp Fiction are awesome examples of this. You can literally skip large sections of these films and have good totally independent short films. I watch the Jules and Vincent short film most the time. Better than pulp fiction 😄

Good point. Bear in mind what Joker has gone through and now a Sergeant. There’s a whole movie in that chapter

I tell you it’s because nobody sees plays anymore. In the 30s and 40s everyone was familiar with stage plays and now we have to be spoon fed.

Kubrick never explained things to the audience. He assumed you were intelligent enough to figure it out and if you weren’t you would eventually.

Well the whole movie is about the duality of man (remember the peace pin scene?) Makes sense that the movie is effectively split in two.
