You would have made money on what you had bought in past 5 years definitely. Even if you didn't like area, you sell and move on. Sorry but if you add up how much you've handed to someone else in 5 years it's eyewatering. For example £2,500 pr month for 5 years is £150,000 you've paid a landlord! Can't agree at all, even replacing a boiler or washing machine wouldn't touch that.

The problem with renting is that they can kick you out at any point and you have to go and look for new accommodation..

Rental is still more expensive than a high interest mortgage. You can research areas by exploring them before you want to buy there.

I mean we straight up bought a house because its really hard to save money when you rent, rent is so expensive these days. But I do live in the Netherlands & I dont know what its like in the UK

ur mortgage ends 1 day n u own it. renting ur paying it off for someone else, most likely at a much higher rate than a mortagage

Also I see a lot of young couples who have only been together maybe a year or two buying a house together. When before they they lived separately with parents. How are they supposed to know if they can even live together!

We own a flat and our mortgage is less than £400 a month we could get over 1K a month for it when we rent it out ! That's the crazy part to me is renting prices

I would never suggest people but their first house without ever renting. you're right that renting gives you experience. but I still think it's good to encourage people to buy a house

People will tell u how their property went up over a few years but wont mention how much they spent on maintenance etc and how that equity means nothing when other houses have gone up a similar rate. Renting is completely fine and nowadays, betting that u will have a regular monthly income for 25+ years is very risky with getting a mortgage. I’m quite passionate about this too cause I think the propaganda on buying a house is so strong and ppl refuse to look at the maths and just demonise renting when location freedom is worth a lot more when ur young and trying to figure out ur career path

I was about to disagree but, actually I don’t if you’re not renting forever and just doing it to work out what you want. I do think the investment is worth it in the long run as at the end of the mortgage at least you’ll have something to show for your money xx

100% agree!! I’ve had people ask why we rent, our boiler went within 6 months of moving in and there’s no chance we’d have afforded to replace it if we had bought our place!! It’s not a waste at all when you’re working things out

This really only works if your have a larger very stable income. Also have enough money to put aside every month to save towards a house and rent. Rent always goes up, your mortgage doesn’t. And the landlord can sell the rental house at any point, buying your own house is more secure.

I’m an estate agent, and I speak to so many young people that are trying to get on to the property ladder , most people don’t have the opportunity to do this and check out areas etc and pay these extensive amounts to try areas, but for people who don’t have the same opportunity to test it all out, buying a house is a big purchase yes but dependent on your lender you don’t pay interest , and buying a property is so much better for buyers now than it ever has been in years, especially with this government the rent is going up and up compared to the actual mortgage costs , of course there is pros and cons but just my experience from seeing the change in the market and the government, it’s also good for first time buyers because they aren’t paying an astronomical amount every month compared to what that mortgage actually is compared to what the landlord decides to charge you xxx

Me and my friend bought a house together at 20, best decision we’ve ever made. We’re now on the property ladder at a young age, have a nice house in a great area to live in, which we wouldn’t have got if we rented, plus we’re reinvesting money that would’ve vanished otherwise
