I LOVE a decades long academic feud. I was reading the Grossman lines out loud to my husband. Peer reviewed insults. Please say more.

😭 Anyone with ptsd can confirm polyvagal theory is correct. His full assessment of how it happens may not be 100%, but overall yes. That's why people with ptsd, adhd, autism, bpd, etc have different brains and different regions are active. It comes from stress and trauma, not the other way around

I think they just need to smooch a bit and then collab on a physiologically accurate model of nervous system regulation. As a neuro nurse and therapist the over attribution of performance of ONE nerve doesn’t track but the methods to regulate do. It’s just more complex than the vagal nerve alone.

I once was at a symposium where the Grossman in the field presented his case against the Porges, with bullet points on why Porges was wrong, immediately prior to Porges’s talk. Porges completely ignored the prior speaker and gave the talk he had planned. It was DRAMA in hydrogen deuterium exchange mass spectrometry.

Oooh so the idea that stress is both psychological and neurobiological predates Porges by decades. The issue with polyvagal theory is that Porges made the claim that some of these brain systems are hierarchical, and they truly aren’t.

My 2 cents as a scientist in another field is: both are correct and incorrect. If they join up they can come up with a better theory for everyone (unless ego prevents that, and egos are PREVALENT in academia)

so are the links between the vagus nerve and the nervous system still solid? i use an icepack on my vagus nerve when i have extremely high anxiety and it’s been quite effective for me. i know studies have supported that even if my opinion changes and i know it’s placebo instead of effective, it’s still likely to work, but i’ve seen many videos on this now and no one has been very specific. i’d just like to have the correct information (i do not have time to read the articles, working 2 jobs and studying)
