It’s also a hypocritical position. Because if parenting is done, and that person is just an adult, then they can choose to not associate with you if they don’t feel like it. Just like any other adult could choose. To say they’re an adult you owe nothing to, but then feeling entitled to their time and attention is illogical.

Maybe it's harsh, but it makes me question their bond with their child. I couldn't turn off being a parent when the clock strikes midnight on their 18th birthday if I wanted to. The relationship changes, but they're still my babies.

Parenting doesn’t stop when your children are adults - it just changes.

I mean if parenting is done then childing can also be done using that person's logic.

In the last year, I escaped an abusive relationship at 47 with a teenaged child in tow, and my sister, at 45, went through a cancer diagnosis and treatment. She has two teenaged girls. You know who supported us all through that? My mother. She didn't stop parenting because we are adults. Her parenting has changed but she still supports and helps and guides wherever she can. If someone thinks their parenting is done as soon as their kid turns 18, then that gives me a really good idea of why their child is estranged.

People who have the view of “parenting is done” should never have had kids in the first place.

Hi Steve 🇨🇦 :
my entire time growing up, my parents informed me at least once a month, "we are obligated to get you to the age of majority alive, and out of jail. After that, you're on your own." At 19 I was told to pack up and leave, don't let the door hit you on the way out. I was low contact from the age of 25 until 40, and now I just don't talk to them.

My mother is exactly like this. She always said she wasn’t my friend and now as an adult she doesn’t understand why I don’t accept being treated like that even though I’m an adult now. I tell her we are not friends now and that takes time to build

I don’t know if I agree with this take. I don’t think people would go no contact with their parents because they treat their adult kids like adults. It is often the opposite, being condescending or infantilizing the adult child that feels more problematic

And I think what estranged parents also fail to grasp is that true leadership is not control or dominance- it’s service. You are there to support, guide, love and care.

I just got off the phone with my son, who started the conversation with “I need an adultier adult”. He’s moving to his first house this weekend (a rental, but a house not an apartment), and needed advice. I’m thrilled to still be there for him.

It just screams - we felt obliged to have kids not actually want them . My kids are adults and if they need me I’m there to support . Can’t say that for my birth giver

I’m 32 and could call my parents anytime of day for anything…and vice versa! They always acted like my parents even as I entered adulthood. Still offer advice, still show up to support me.

My father is still so concerned about holding himself as a parent that he wouldn't even ask for a woman's number in front of me and they were viiiibin. He's 69, and Mom has been gone since '19. I know he dates a bit, but he just doesn't think his kids should know about it, at all. He LIVES WITH my brother. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 He says that Dad just says he's going, "Out," when he has a date.

As someone with elderly parents, and having recently stood at my father’s death bed, he was 90, I can tell you that the power dynamic does in fact change. It’s mostly very slow and gradual, but it does and just one day you realise that it has and you are the responsible adult in the room.
