@thegalacticgal: When I was 14, I got a letter in the mail that changed everything. After a rigorous audition and application process, I had been accepted to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, a prestigious arts conservatory with high school and college programs. So my sophomore year of high school, I left home to pursue a career in trumpet performance. 🎺 At 15, I was competing on the national stage and being scouted by top music universities and military bands. But what I really fell in love with was the *math* in music. And thankfully I had some really phenomenal mentors and teachers who helped me find my way into engineering. (I’ve been obsessed with space since I was 4, so it was destined to be) I ended up at the University of Tennessee Knoxville on a big music scholarship, but ultimately decided I already had a degree in trumpet and wanted to focus on engineering at that point. I did, however, play in the iconic Pride of the Southland Marching Band for a few years until I suffered a neck injury. Thankfully I’m fine now but admittedly I rarely pick up my trumpet anymore, so much so that it feels like an entirely different lifetime. I think there’s so much beauty in how mathematical music is, that math and music are both universal languages, and how there’s no one-size-fits-all journey in life. 🎵
