The game Stellaris has an event where one of your ships gets hit by ancient mass driver rounds from another galaxy.

The slug becomes higher mass due to in-lore scifi magic (the actual Mass Effect!) so they’re actually correct on that.

The approach to space warfare in Mass Effect was actually quite 'realistic' even laws attacking fleets couldn't directly attack defending fleets for risk of hitting the planet

There is a space opera where ships are battling at a combined .4 light speed. It's described as the firing passes having to be automatic because the ships are in range for only a fraction of a second

Seems like something an instructor might intentionally exaggerated in some respects to get the point across. They dont need to know the exact details, they just need to know the consequences.

so my understanding of the element zero or more the weapons from mass effect the weapon projects a magnetic field over the ammo that completely negates mass so it weighs nothing and from there it's like a gauss slug but instead of the slug being propelled it's the field holding the slug meaning it can be fired faster than even a gauss slug and it all boils down to an element we don't have on earth

Hold on now. F=ma. It is destroying things with its mass, so it is a weapon of mass destruction.

real quick, did the math. a 20 kilogram projectile going 1.3% the speed of light would actually be about 36 kilotons, not 38 like the game says, but not 15 like op says.

hey, when people have cities in space stations, anything that can take that thing outta the sky is automatically a weapon of mass destruction

Eh, realistic space combat doesn't favor kinetics at all. Warfare is always conducted at the farthest possible distance. Take whatever range you are accurate over with a kinetic weapon, and you can build a weapon with active guidance that is accurate at 10x the range. An actively guided missile will always beat a gun. Active guidance means combat maneuvering matters.
