As a developer, that has been AI code, developers will exist for a long time. AI can barely write code..

You always need someone to check the code. Otherwise you will get garbage code or security breaches in the future. what is frightening is how hackable are going to be the apps in the future. imagine a bank or an airplane software coded using this standards. 😅

People need to get their heads out of the sand, for their own sake. I'm not a developer, I just have basic coding understanding. Basic. Last year, I built a full application, Supabase back end, dB including the design of each table,API into GPTo4 with edge functions, front end in React/Vercel. I built the entire thing by using chatGPT in the browser chat window and copy/paste the code in VSCode. Yes, I know. crazy. Grueling work for months. Thousands of lines of course. But it worked, it worked well. Then I got a new job and abandoned the project for months. I really forgot what I had done with the code. Last night, I decided to copy the repo and throw Google anti-gravity at it. I'm still in shock. With a single prompt, it refactored the entire codebase. One shot, zero errors, works perfectly. I had previously planned a functionality that scans a barcode, references a 3rd party dB via API and gives me structured results. Also, do the same with a photo (no barcode) and API into GPT o4 and do the same (by analysing the photo). Two prompts in anti-gravity. One shot each. No errors. Works perfect, looks perfect. This has already happened, it's not something that's about to happen...

I've yet to see any sizable codebase of something with any level of specific and unique aspects to it written by AI. AI can do a lot on the one-shot portion of the code, but what it can't do well is retaining full nuance understanding of the overall system as it grows. Not all code can be sufficiently made into tests or modularized into small parts. Currently, you still need a well versed programmer to figure out how to structure all of this

there's an additional track which is foundational to all of IT, the person that manages, implements, and supports the actual physical infrastructure the hardware. this requires domain specific knowledge on AI ML hardware and how to craft hardware construction and composition to meet the needs of the business and the AI itself.

Don’t forget the fourth pass, which is the business analysts. These folks have always been a bridge between the business side of things, a.k.a. the domain experts, and the technology side of things.. business analyst aren’t necessarily domain experts, but they can translate the domain expertise into something that can be built into technology

Software development is not all about code... making contextual architectual decissions is very important... you still need to know your stuff, AI makes q hell of a lot of mistakes still...

Nate, so much of the conversation seems predicated on this idea that AI is nearing a plateau. We’re all frantically trying to figure out “where humans will be more capable than machines”, ignoring the end of the sentence: “for a few more months.” I am an optimist but I just don’t see where we will fit in.

Everyone’s overhyping this. Even with specs in MD files, Claude and Copilot lose the plot on complex builds. AI might mean we need fewer devs, but it doesn't replace the need for technical brains. Non-tech users don’t know the first thing about security or services, and honestly, most don't want to learn. When the AI output fails (and it will), you still need a dev to save the day.

Nate, I got one for ya I've been mulling over. Think on this for a moment. Does code go up or down? Hear me out. Take c#, for example. Why are we bothering with c# itself? Isn't it just an abstraction layer between intent and machine code? What if we compress the code and the compiler, so that we can go directly from "find and transform this particular thing in this stack of things" to machine code, without a length section of C# in between. The c# is for human eyeballs, why bother, right? So now, the "code" is the initial instruction, the business logic.
