@yuliaxgon: La Virgen de Guadalupe is widely recognized as a Catholic and Indigenous symbol of Mexico, yet her West African history is rarely acknowledged. The Black Virgin of Extremadura in Spain was carried to Mexico under Catholic rule. West and Central African people brought through enslavement recognized her through the qualities of Yemayá, while Indigenous communities related to her as Tonantzin at Tepeyac. Over time, these traditions merged within colonial Mexico. During the War of Independence, Guadalupe became a revolutionary symbol carried by armies that included Afro-descended, Indigenous, and mixed communities. Later national narratives minimized her West African roots. Guadalupe is La Virgen Morena. She is the Black Madonna. #guadalupe #westafrica #yoruba #mexico #BlackHistory

Tonantzin came first. She was an Aztec goddess worshipped long before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. Black Madonnas started appearing in Europe during the medieval period, roughly the 1100s to 1400s. So Tonantzin predates them by centuries.

La Virgen de Guadalupe, or "La Morenita" (the little brown girl), is a central icon of Mexican religious syncretism, representing a blending of Indigenous, Spanish, and, historically, African, influences. Appearing in 1531 to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, her dark skin and mixed-race (mestiza) features facilitated the conversion of indigenous peoples. While primarily seen as a synthesis of Catholicism and Aztec goddess veneration (Tonantzin), her identity also reflects the African diaspora in Latin America

EVERY black madonna is formed through synchronization INCLUDING the European one, some used for POC/indigenous and/or European paganism. This is why a lot of marys are sacred because the goddess behind them are sacred

This is always enjoyable ☺️. As a side note the blueprint for Mary and Jesus, resurrection etc was around thousands of years before Jesus, the concept of one god (akhenaten) being the first and before Moses in the Nile valley. That was the model from which Jews blueprinted their ideas

While there were examples of black Madonna’s, they were not standard. They were not average or the original European nations knew about Black people, especially Spain they like to represent all communities.

tepeyac hill was associated with chikomekoatl and siwakoatl. never tonantzin coatlicue. also there’s no singular teotl named tonantzin. tonantzin is an honorific tile that many mother figure teotl have. there is no ‘tonantzin’.
