@camrunsoncoffee: Disclaimer, I’m not a marathoner..! First let’s start with the basics: why do distance runners do long runs? • ↑ Mitochondrial density → greater aerobic ATP production. • ↑ Capillarisation = more blood vessels → better oxygen delivery + waste removal. • ↑ Stroke volume: Your heart pumps more blood per beat → higher cardiac output. • Connective tissue adaptation: repeated low-intensity load → collagen synthesis + tendon durability. Long runs primarily stress the aerobic system for extended periods, driving central (heart) and peripheral (muscle) adaptations. But what’s the difference for the mile or 1500m? • Yes, it is still ~75–85% aerobic • BUT, the race duration? ~3–5 minutes • Your ability is often limited by lactate turn point + running economy Lactate turn point = The highest speed you can sustain before lactate accumulates rapidly. So I opted for an extra threshold instead of the long run for the following reasons: • ↑ Lactate clearance capacity • ↑ Speed at a given blood lactate concentration • Improve efficiency at race-specific velocities • Provide aerobic stimulus with lower total mechanical load Long runs do build broad aerobic capacity but with training for the mile, threshold targets aerobic speed and metabolic control. Different event → different limiting factors → different emphasis. Anyway, this is just an example of how there’s more than one way to train for a specific event 💪🏼 #Running #threshold #altitude #run #track
Some 7:13 mile freshman is going to use this TikTok as an excuse ✌️😭

Depends what you consider a long run anything over 13 miles or in the 9-13 mile range is considered a long run

I’d say depends whether you’re an 800/miler or a miler/5k runner. Long runs are great for increasing the amount of anaerobic work you can handle, they are certainly useful for some milers but others can rely more on speed if you’re that mile/5k guy

If you are talking specifically for your distance then yeah long runs aren’t the most important factor

I do long runs instead of threshold on days when I need extra recovery (long runs are easy)

I think gone are the days of Steve Ovette . mile 3.48, 800m 1:44.09😳, running 120 to 140 miles a week.

It may be overrated for a miler but not a marathon runner…

This is why I do threshold in the middle of my long run

It's better to take a rest day during the week than to run every day with a long run, especially in summer.

how far will you go at the most, and do you double on easy days instead of longer singles?

i love a good long run i’m also a 5k indoor and 10k outdoor runner so they are necessary for me but they are not for everybody
