@kadenwatson11: Why is Sentimental Value nominated for Best Picture? Let’s chat about its use of the domestic narrative genre! #sentimentalvalue #whattowatch #filmtok #oscars #movies
I also think it’s interesting to note how the generational trauma impacts the two daughters differently

Thank you for the great analysis of Sentimental Value.
As a Norwegian myself, I found a lot of joy in this. Very emotional, and a beautiful film. And Renate Reinsve is truly a first‑class actress.
Stellan is obviously the GOAT and speaks for himself.
It’s always interesting to see your explanations, and I always check whether you’ve done a breakdown before I watch a film 👍🏻😎

one detail I loved is the way their house feels like a character. a silent witness to it all with no way of communicating besides the literal cracks and creaks it's experienced over the years. a very beautiful motif.

Norwegian filmmaking had really been putting up bangers the last several years. I love the tilt of realism and how grounded most of the films I see from there are. loved Worst Person in the World, that one hit too close to home 🙃

I love how even though there isn’t anything said in that final scene, the Labi Siffre needle drop helps bring the viewer to the feeling of catharsis.

i feel this movie is a love letter to eldest siblings. portraying so well how we often end up carrying trauma deeper because we never had anyone to shield us from it. like the younger sister said “there’s one major difference in the way we grew up. i had you. you were there for me. i felt safe” ❤️🩹

also, the plastic bag Gustav carries the script in, is a “Vinmonopolet” bag, which is the only place in Norway you can get alcohol over a certain percentage. her saying that he only calls her when he’s drunk and the bag only confirms to her that he hasn’t changed

I feel so sorry for Elle Fannings character. An actor who really wants to make a good movie beyond her reach, with a director she admires, only to be caught up in the drama of the family.

Totally agree, for me it just felt so personal. It resonated so deeply with me because Im also the oldest child with a very absent father, so this movie felt like it was made for me. The acting brings a brilliant script to another level and the direction is amazing, this is my favorite movie of 2025!

I loved Sentimental Value. I think the final scene really nails this movie as “best picture worthy”. The way Nora and Gustav look at each other without saying anything, says everything. They are alike in many ways, one of which is how they communicate 🥺❤️it’s when they’re able to see each other, and they use art to do it.

So when I watched this, I didn’t realize it wasn’t in English so was very confused on my pirated site. But, Kaden I always love your analysis and, unless I missed it, I think you missed something important in the storytelling, which was how they talk about the previous family members who lived in the house. It made the house feel like another character as the various family members left their imprint on the house. It made me feel more for Nora and almost insulted that their father was “defacing” it through the movie. It made the ending more cathartic, especially considering they show it was shot on a sound stage

Been waiting on this one - loved it. It’s my movie of the year, but I related a lot to the main character. Plus Stellan Skarsgard is amazing, as always. Thanks for your analysis!
