The solution is simple. Stop tipping. That will mean restaurants will close for lack of staff, or they will have to raise wages in order to attract staff. The brainwashing that blames the customer for this problem has to end.

you don’t tip 20% so the food goes up 20% and then you pay the same amount.

You already tip 20% so if the prices increased with 20% you would end up paying the ✨EXACT SAME✨

wait staff in usa make out like bandits. some earning hundreds and hundreds of dollars per shift. they dont want a reasonable wage because they will make less. they like no one actually knowing how.much they earn

No. The owners would earn less. It is greed on the part of owners/bosses!

In Germany, a tip is just rounding up to let them keep the change or a few Euros. Not 20% of your meal cost.

I hated the tipping culture in the States. in Miami they charge a standard 18% then they want a tip on top of that. no way

As a former server and world traveler, I’ll explain. Most restaurants in America are owned by a corporation. Bottom line, they want to make billions. Yes, if they pay servers $20hr food prices will go up slightly…. but not dramatically. But I’ll tell you from visiting 30+ countries, service sucks when the waiter isn’t worried about his/her tip. I’ve been to Portugal many times along with many other counties in Europe and you definitely don’t get prompt service. The only saving grace is if they know you’re American they will be hoping for a tip and give you better service than they would a local. I’m all about raising server wage here. I’ll just have to let the server know I’m tipping 20% so they give me better service than those that won’t tip them.

In the rest of the world tax is included in the price and tipping is optional.

the thing is: food prices might go up but certainly less than 20%. plus then it takes the uncertainty out of the whole thing and i can see the actual price i gotta pay

the difference lies in basically unless you can actually run the business side of a restaurant your restaurant will fail. If you're going to pay your staff, it needs to be a viable business. Not a hobby project paid for by your employees. this is not a bad thing.

If you have to tip it's effectively the same as rising the food prices.

If you pay 25% tip instead the price going up 25% and no tip, then there's absolutely no difference for the customer

its becouse your middleman wants to make unreasonable profit. in Europe business owner is satisfied with reasonable money and getting well of slower. in usa you want to become millionaire as fast as possible no matter what, even if this means exploiting fellow americans. I worked for usa company for 5 years and honestly it was all about quarterly sales result. everything else was a lie.

The reason people believe this “prices will increase” excuse is because they are the same kind of people that are heading these businesses who’s goal is to min-max their profit margins as much as possible.

Tipping in Portugal is just a nice gesture. People will accept it with pleasure, but we're talking about very little sums. If I go alone for a simple meal, or a coffee and a croissant, 1 euro will be perfect. It's on you to decide on what you can give. If you can't give a tip you just don't. No problem.

why do yall call it tipping culture? tipping culture is what we have elsewhere in the world, each places has a culture about it. in the US its not optional, its a tipping scam where you have to pay of the salary. its not culture..
