being artistically minded or intelligent doesn't excuse engaging in or complicity with acts of horrific violence, imperialism, and facism. mishima may have been incredibly artistically gifted and tortured, but that will never excuse the utter rat bastard of a man he ended up becoming. art cannot truly flourish without the security of a free society to produce and partake in it, which was exactly what mishima attempted to undermine. real social conditions come before the fantasies of fiction.

Mishima is a weird case, he was a fascist that fetishized death and masculinity but was also an incredible writer, one of the best of the 20th century, you kinda have to separate the art from the artist

most people that call mishima fascist have read nothing by him. defense of a culture and various interviews make it clear that politics was not his focus. he was far more interested in art and culture

Art and culture are a product of human productive activity, they cannot be separated from it. Culture itself does not exist in a vacuum, unrelated to "politics". In this way, Mishima's woes about cultural decay of Japan and the decay of its art, is, in fact, a critique of "liberal democracy" (capitalism). However, instead of critiquing capital through a post capitalist pov he is instead infatuated with vague notions of days past in much the same way reactionary Englishmen are nostalgic for the glory days of an empire that no longer exists. It's national pride and nostalgic feudal fetishism, reactionary in every sense. There is no beauty in such art, no matter how pretty it is.

His art is intrinsically linked to his political ideas, they are present even in his fiction, his artistry is himself and he was wholly his politics until his very end.

Do you have a guide on where you should start reading? I’ve never really read before and I started the Odyssey and I’m enjoying it. But have no clue if that’s where I should’ve started.

I appreciate this take. People too often reduce other people into caricatures because of political allegiances. It’s hard to find a single great person who isn’t morally or politically grey at the best.

Mishima was something else— man. His insights on the realm of sun and physicality being the same part of the same snake with which abstraction and the realm of night comes from— absolutely beautiful shit.

The cheapest sort of pride is national pride; for if a man is proud of his own nation, it argues that he has no qualities of his own of which he can be proud; otherwise he would not have recourse to those which he shares with so many millions of his fellowmen” - Schopenhauer.

People need to realise that art is not defined by politics. Art is a human pursuit, and no matter how extreme a person's political views may be, they are still capable of great art simply through being human. Art is not good becuse its written by a humanist and it's not bad because it was written by a fascist. quality doesn't care about what political beliefs you have.
