@s.x.traveler: Portugal’s islands aren’t about choosing just one — they’re about experiencing them step by step, each with its own character 🌍✨ Start with Madeira 🏔️🌊 Sharp mountain ridges, dramatic Atlantic cliffs, and some of the most unreal hikes in Europe. Then head to the Azores 🌋 São Miguel is the most famous and incredibly diverse 🌿 But if you ask me? Flores is something else — wild, remote, and overflowing with waterfalls 💧🌿 It feels untouched. Almost disconnected from the rest of the world. 🗺️ After living on these islands for more than 3 years, I built DETAILED INTERACTIVE MAPS for each of them — based on my own exploration. Inside you’ll find not only must-see highlights, but also real hidden gems you won’t see in typical guidebooks. • Top hikes 🥾 • The best sunrise & sunset viewpoints 🌅 • Beaches, scenic spots, hotels & restaurants 🍽️🏨 • Practical advice for independent travelers 🚗 All available inside an offline-friendly mobile app 📱 🔗 Link in bio #VisitPortugal #Açores #Madeira #Azores #MadeiraIsland

I’m so afraid of Madeira’s airport but I found out a few years ago that this was the part of Portugal my ancestors were from so I’m praying one day I can get over my fear

Most people confuse this with the Azores, but this is Madeira, a completely different volcanic system in the Atlantic. Madeira is a shield volcanic island formed roughly 5 million years ago by hotspot activity. Unlike the Azores, which sit on a tectonic triple junction between the North American, Eurasian, and African plates, Madeira is entirely on the African Plate. That geological difference explains the dramatic, sheer coastal cliffs you see here, some exceeding 500 meters in vertical drop. The capital, Funchal, was founded in the 15th century during Portuguese maritime expansion and quickly became a strategic Atlantic waypoint. Sugar cane made Madeira one of Europe’s earliest plantation economies before Brazil overtook it. Later, Madeira wine became globally significant, it was even used to toast the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The terraced green slopes you see aren’t just aesthetic. They’re engineered agricultural systems supported by levadas, 16th century irrigation channels that still transport mountain water across the island today. There are over 2,000 km of these water channels, and many of the hiking trails follow them. Geologically dramatic, historically strategic, agriculturally engineered, this island isn’t just “pretty”, it’s a layered Atlantic outpost shaped by volcanism, trade, and water management. Portugal’s islands aren’t interchangeable, Madeira and the Azores are entirely different stories.
