Northern sector, 1939 (Kalandadze). Male skull, fragmentary; the base and the right part of the face are missing. Strongly dolichocranial, with an especially large longitudinal diameter. In norma verticalis, it is egg-shaped. In the sagittal plane, the following are noted: strong development of the brow ridges, a sloping forehead, and generally a rounded sagittal contour. Attention is drawn to the strongly developed relief of the lower part of the occipital region. Overall, the skull is very massive and large, and apparently had a broad face. During the Late Iron Age, Mtskheta and the region of Shida Kartli were already largely under the control of expanding Kartvelian groups, who had spread from Samtskhe and Imereti and were additionally associated with the Koban culture, whose metropolis was the basin of the Great Liakhvi River. The preceding population of the Shida Kartli region, linked to the Trialeti cultural horizon and correlated with Para-Armenic tribes, had been conquered and gradually assimilated by the expanding Kartvelians. This process contributed to the formation of a proto-East Georgian genetic profile. Within a few centuries, these people would give rise to the historical Kingdom of Iberia, with Mtskheta as its principal city. #ancientdna
