As someone who has done a double mastectomy and reconstruction. Do the egg retrieval and do IVF immediately - have a baby and then immediately have the mastectomy. Having a mastectomy, recovery and reconstruction is brutal and can take years start to finish if u have complications- I did this with a 9mth old and 2yr old.

Not trying to tell you what to do in any way. Just a word of warning. My friend had a double mastectomy & reconstruction and it was not an easy or quick process. It was year after the mastectomy before she could have the reconstruction and the recovery from the reconstruction wasn’t easy either.

My mom died of ovarian cancer. I’ve had all the testing and I did not test positive for the BRCA2 thankfully but I still had a preventative total hysterectomy (uterus and ovaries) at 38 just to be proactive. I would do it all again. Not that my opinion matters, but I support your decision and would do the same thing if I were in your shoes. I’m so happy for you that you found out now and can be proactive. Sending you all the love and prayers. You’ve got this and no matter which way you choose to go we’re behind you ❤️🙏

I have this gene too & and I’m thinking of getting prophylactic mastectomy. What are you thinking about for reconstruction ?

look into doing immediate reconstruction vs expanders. expanders are awful, but I will say I think it helps with infection risk/healing time prior to adding the weight of reconstruction right away! the dr for me educated me on benefits of waiting for reconstruction and once they talked about it, it made perfect sense! Just something to talk to them about! and definitely easier recovery with 1 over 2.

Just curious why you would have to have a C-section?

It sounds like a good plan. I think reconstruction takes a good long while. Will you remove your ovaries at some point, as well?

damn. that's a big decision to make and your plan makes a lot of sense.
why would you need a c section for future deliveries?

Since hormones increase the risk will the hormones you take for egg retrieval increase the risk? I feel so bad you’re going through this. You are such an amazing momma! You were meant to have more babies! Prayers your way with whatever choices you make.

I do have a question as you mentioned an egg retrieval. Are you planning to do genetic testing on future embryos for the BRCA2 mutation? This is just true curiosity! I work in the medical laboratory field, so the ability to make those types of decisions with the science IVF provides is so interesting to me.

All the good vibes! I wonder if they’ll eventually have you take your ovaries. I’m super high risk bc too and when I asked about having ovaries out they said the tubal ligation I had reduced risks but I’m suspect of that
