Thank you. We are polite - we’re just not fake. We don’t go to the supermarkets for smalltalk with the cashier - we go get our groceries. Respectfully.

It is normal to ask another how are you 😅 even in Germany. And we are rude and strict with another. Germans are afraid of new people, new things and in General Change. Because we learn to obey and follow Rules. And new people means Chaos and possible Change in the Rules we know. Also we have 16 Bundesländer and everyone is a bit different. People in Hamburg a way more polite, they like smalltalk and German people from Berlin are Not like that. But Berlin Germans are very loyal and less posh and more down to earth.

Because asking “how are you?” in Germany is considered a genuine question of interest not an empty flask of politeness

Thanks for clarifying this. To me as a German it always feels weird when I’m traveling in a country where random strangers ask me how I am. Because I tend to tell the truth 😂

the fake politeness in the states was bothering me all the time. A 'how are you' and not even expecting an answer or waiting for it is not polite.

You know what is impolite asking "how are you?" but not really caring about it.

If people ask me “how’re you?” and you’re not interested in the answers: that’s rude to me.

"How are you" is totally common in german. But giving an honest answer to it, too. It's simply not a phrase, but real interest.

I never understand why people move to a country that is very different and then are shocked when living there is not what they are used to.

I'm Norwegian. We find it rude to ask people personal questions unless you have a close relation. So we don't ask strangers how they're doing, unless we have a reason to do so. I.e. if you are a nurse. Our opinions about politeness differ from the USA. It's polite to give people peace, space and privacy.

I love that my German neighbors don't ask how I am. I don't care how they are either (on a daily basis. for something specific like an illness or other issue, help is offered). We say good morning and good evening and leave it at that.
