Deir Anba Bishoy – The Heart of Coptic Monasticism in Wadi El-Natrun Located in the desert valley of Wadi El-Natrun, about 100 km northwest of Cairo, the Monastery of Saint Bishoy is one of the most important and ancient Christian monasteries in Egypt. It was founded in the 4th century AD by Saint Bishoy, one of the Desert Fathers who devoted his life to prayer, humility, and service. The monastery became a center of Coptic monastic life and learning, and it remains active to this day, housing a community of monks who continue the same traditions that began over 1,600 years ago. Among its treasures: The Church of Saint Bishoy, which contains the saint’s incorrupt body preserved in a wooden shrine. The Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 6th century, with rare icons and manuscripts. The defensive tower, built in medieval times to protect the monks from desert raids. Ancient manuscripts and Coptic writings that document early Christian life in Egypt. Saint Bishoy’s life is remembered for his deep compassion and the vision in which Christ appeared to him, promising that his body would remain uncorrupted — a miracle that believers still witness today. The monastery is part of the Wadi El-Natrun monastic complex, which also includes: The Monastery of El-Baramous (St. Macarius the Great) The Syrian Monastery (Deir El-Surian) The Monastery of St. Pishoy’s disciple, Paul of Tammah 🕊️ Visiting Wadi El-Natrun is a journey through time — to the very birthplace of monastic life, where silence and devotion still shape the desert. #CopticEgypt #WadiElNatrun #DeirAnbaBishoy #CopticMonasticism #ChristianHeritage
