I really want to do a PhD, but I'm riddled with imposter syndrome and feeling inferior

I knew there was a more efficient way to read papers! There’s no way anyone is supposed to read 100 papers front to back. I asked my professors this in school and they all said I should read everything. Thanks for this info!

I’ve done 2 Masters (couldn’t find the PhD funding) I do all this but… i set up my word doc w reference info on the top & in tables of 3 columns…pg number, quote, thoughts… I do type out quotes to use verbatim w page numbers and notes on where to use them. Then I don’t look at the resource again. Print out all my notes and work from those when writing… if I need the exact quote it’s there if not I paraphrase and source… don’t with that resource? I set it aside and move to the next page. Lots of prep but so much easier to organise as I go along and as I complete my papers. It’s worked very well for me

As someone with a PhD in history, where we have journal articles but also lots of books and primary sources, I found it incredibly helpful to argue with the text in the margins. Doing this helped tremendously to clarify my position and see where each piece of literature attached to it.

I have a question! If we read something with a goal in mind wouldn’t it distorts the voice of the original author? While it would definitely assists with time wouldn’t it lower accuracy or even relevance of the paper we’re making? Kind of similar to listening to others to argue against them rather than understand their point. Is there any way to balance between effective reading without falling to this issue?

I am (hopefully) on my last sem of my MS and I’ve been having a lot of Impostor Syndrome cuz this is exactly how I’ve been doing my lit review T__T Been feeling so guilty cuz I never usually bothered to read the whole article. Thank you so much for the validation! I needed to hear this :))

This is actually the best advice I’ve gotten this year. I’ve been procrastinating doing my literature review cos I read papers for 3 months and completely forgot everything. Now I feel like I actually know where to restart with purpose! 👏🏾

Submitting my PhD dissertation on Feb 28 2026. I was disorganized during the first two years, which were crucial for my literature review. I eventually got those points you mentioned right later on, when I was reading in order to write and finding citations for the claims I made in my manuscripts. I wish I had known those ideas before I started my PhD program; they could have helped me stay organized and be much more efficient with my literature review.

I always did these things but because I was too dang lazy to read the whole thing. Thought I was cheating the system, meanwhile I was just doing it right 😂

Absolutely! Developing the right reading strategy is crucial exam reading demands focus and efficiency, while research reading requires depth, critical analysis, and connecting ideas. Mastering both approaches truly shapes a strong academic thinker.

Those are some helpful tips. I usually read the abstract but didn’t think about also reading the conclusion.
