It is most famous as the alma mater of The Beach Boys (Brian, Carl, Dennis Wilson, and Al Jardine). The campus has undergone major renovations since 2019 to replace 1950s-era buildings. The school was established to serve the growing Hawthorne community, with the district forming earlier in the century. The school is iconic for its mid-century, car-culture, and surfing vibe associated with The Beach Boys. The band performed at their alma mater’s prom in 1969. In March 1990, the school was the site of a protest and riot regarding allegations of racism. Today, it operates as a diverse campus, sometimes recognized for its Engineering and Manufacturing Academy. The campus is undergoing significant modernization, replacing its vintage 1950s, "historical" aesthetic.
