@thebiocosmos: I love the ribosomes. They are such intricate machinery. The ribosome's function is so crucial to life on Earth that its structure is evolutionarily conserved all the way from bacteria to humans. This suggests that even small changes that affected its shape or functions in any way could be catastrophic to the cells, therefore natural selection preserves almost all of its overall structure across kingdoms. Yet, there are still a few differences between the bacterial and human ribosomes that we can exploit to design specific molecules to preferentially inhibit bacterial protein synthesis while sparing ours. A few examples of such antibiotics are gentamicin, streptomycin, doxycyline, erythromycin, etc. The 3 people who solved the crystal structure of the ribosome, Ada Yonath, Venki Ramakrishnan, and Thomas A.
