HelloChinese was amazing years ago but now they have heavy paywalls so if you test out of HSK 1 there's no forward momentum

italki for one on one lessons, du Chinese for reading, Skritter and stroke order dot info for how to write a character (don’t use basic computer fonts), Pleco for a dictionary, CanTone to learn to speak the tones well, HelloChinese for learning via app. YoYo Chinese for YouTube lessons - definitely useful for learning the basic sounds from English. Viki, iQiyi, and/or TenCent to watch mandarin language TV shows.

hello Chinese is actually so good, I use it and they have another app for japanese AND Korean, I'm also learning Japanese and I ACTUALLY understood smth. Duolingo just makes you repeat words while hello Chinese also teaches the words meaning AND grammar with how you should use the words/characters

Yeah duolingo is terrible, it’s not made for Chinese language. Is no one using the chairman’s bao anymore? This was my go to app for many many years!

Lack of friend streaks (and lack of friend features in general) totally kills HelloChinese for me. I need that for motivation, can't stay committed on my own. I need the peer pressure from friends.

also in the US we have Half Price Books and I've found a TON of good learning materials there for cheap. actual text books, usually only lightly used. and children's books or short novels are excellent too!

duolingo is good for vocabulary extension I'm currently learning chinese and I love that idea to learn other vocabulary plus I consume a lot of chinese media so I'll learning step by step
