Business in the UK can refuse legal tender (cash/coins) and insist on other payment methods. "Legal tender" only implies that, if a debt exists, offering it prevents legal action for non-payment; it does not mean a retailer must accept it for a transaction.

I personally don't understand " the because she held it in her hand, she took it as payment". so if I hand a £50 note... Which is a fake. they pick it up and look at it and realise it is fake, does that mean it's too late cuz they picked it up it has to be accepted

The problem with this is the original payment WAS accepted. Assuming this is true, Sainsbury's are 100% in the wrong. If this is not the case, then it depends. However, the officer giving sainsburys customer data is 100% illegal

People need to realise shops can choose what form of payment they want. Imagine if they only insisted on taking cheques, they choose the form that is most suitable for their customers and business
