"WTF is this?" This is NOT a hypertrophy or strength exercise, in any way, shape, or form. It's targeted for athletic training and for people looking to improve spinal stability. It's going to really expose weaknesses in those areas so start light (I show it with a lighter weight towards the end of the video). The purpose of this exercise is to work the deep muscles of the core (obliques and TVA) and spine (especially the Quadratus Lumborum, which is your spine's primary "anti-tilt" muscle and your spinal erectors) via frontal plan anti-rotation stabilization and what I call "torque management." Basically, this means it's going to strengthen your body's anti-tilt spinal support muscles and strengthen your ability to transfer force through the deep core muscles, which is a CRITICAL capacity for athletes. I've showed variations of this done on a flat bench (transverse plane) and an incline bench (a combination of frontal and transverse), but never in strictly frontal plane vertical setup like this. It doesn't light up your obliques and TVA the way the flat bench version does because that one puts those muscles in a more direct position to contract and allows you to use more weight, but I found it to be extremely effective for engaging the QL especially. You'll do a single dumbbell shoulder press and a single handle pulldown (close, neutral grip) at the same time. These opposing forces require those deep core muscles to fire strongly to manage the torque going into the spine and stabilize the body for the press and pull. One thing to note about the setup is that when I'm pulling down with the right arm, I've got my right foot back and left foot forward (switch it up when you move to the other side). I found this to be the best foot placement for maximizing strength and stability in the movement. Trouble building your back or shoulders? I've got a full 3-week specialization program for you...
