Major General: Albino Akol Akol, PSC (RTD) اللواء: البينو اكول اكول تونق General Albino Akol Akol, PSC (RTD), was a South Sudanese military officer, statesman, and veteran of the Anyanya I liberation movement. He was one of the senior South Sudanese officers who served in the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) following the 1972 peace agreement and later held several high-ranking government positions in Sudan and South Sudan. He also chaired the secret underground military cell that brought together senior Anyanya I officers who later became founders of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). General Albino Akol Akol was born in Maduany Village, Ajuet Section, Mariam Payam, Aweil West County. He attended Rumbek Secondary School before leaving in the early 1960s to join the Anyanya I. As a student, he participated in protests against the government of President Ibrahim Abboud and was arrested for opposing policies affecting Southern Sudan. During the Anyanya I movement, General Albino distinguished himself as a capable military officer and received advanced military training in Israel. After the peace of 1972, he went for military studies in Egypt and the United Kingdom as a Sudanese Armed Forces officer. Following the 1972 agreement, he was integrated into the Sudan Armed Forces, where he rose through the ranks and earned the prestigious Passed Staff College (PSC) qualification. He became known for honouring the late William Deng Nhial by visiting his grave in Tonj and performing a military gun salute, an act that drew criticism from the Khartoum government because William Deng was regarded as a political opponent of the regime. As a result, he was demoted from his military rank for saluting the grave of William. In the early 1980s, General Albino Akol was elected Chairman of the Secret Military Cell, an underground organization formed by former Anyanya I officers, politicians, and students seeking South Sudan's independence. The organization included prominent officers such as Dr. John Garang de Mabior, Kerubino Kuanyin Bol, William Nyuon Bany, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and Arok Thon Arok. Colonel Paterno Atar Aboi served as the Secretary General of the secret cell. The group planned to declare the rebellion in South Sudan on 18 August 1983 through coordinated military deployments across the South Sudan region. Under that plan, General Albino Akol would have become the chairman of the second rebellion in South Sudan. However, the outbreak of the SPLM/A rebellion in May 1983, before General Akol left Khartoum for South Sudan, changed the course of history, and the plan did not go as planned. Although General Albino did not join the SPLM/A in the bush, he remained an influential figure and was regarded as having contributed to the liberation struggle through his leadership and later administrative roles. Throughout his distinguished public career, General Albino Akol served in several senior government positions, including: 1/ Military Governor of the Bahr el Ghazal Region (1985–1986) during the transitional government of President Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab. 2/ Member of Parliament. 3/ National Minister of Transport in Sudan (1996–1998). 4/ Minister of Physical Infrastructure in the Coordinating Council for Southern Sudan (1998). 5/ Minister of Petroleum and Industry of South Sudan (2005). He was well respected for his military professionalism, administrative experience, and dedication to public service. General Albino Akol Akol passed away on 19 April 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, while receiving medical treatment. His death was widely mourned across South Sudan, particularly in Aweil. He is remembered as one of the pioneering military leaders of the South Sudanese liberation movement, a respected Sudan Armed Forces officer, the Chairman of the Secret Military Cell, and a dedicated public servant whose contributions helped shape the history of South Sudan.
